• The production of the Chevrolet Chevelle began in 1963 as a response to Pontiac's GTO. Intended for market competition among the other US muscle cars, the Chevelle was produced with its own line of engines and performance auto parts. The design was simply a smaller version of Chevrolet's Impala with a V8 engine and 300 horsepower. Originally, the Chevelle was unable to perform alongside its cousin muscle cars; Chevrolet was quick to respond.
  
  

New Options

• The 1967 Chevelle was offered with a number of new options. A three speed automatic was offered in addition to the two speed automatic and the three and four speed manual models. The '67 Chevelle was given new tires to increase handling performance and the front wheels were given disc brakes. Chevrolet was upping the stakes on the muscle car market.
  
  

Convenience

• Chevrolet altered several vital design features to make their muscle car a more reasonable choice for drivers. The body of the Chevelle was lengthened and the redesigned rear end included stacked brake lights and larger taillights. With an asking price around $4000, the Chevelle was seeing a steady increase in popularity.
  
  

Engines

• The '67 Chevelle was offered with two engine options. The first was a 396 cubic-inch V8 that produced 325 horsepower at 4800 rpm. This standard V8 had a torque of 410 lb-ft at 3200 rpm. The second engine option was Chevrolet's L34, a 396 V8 with 350 horsepower at 5200 rpm and a torque of 415 lb-ft at 3600 rpm.
  
  

Performance

• On top of the 1967 model's streamlined design and easy maneuverability, the Chevelle maintained its reputation for high muscle car performance. The '67 Chevelle with the L34 engine went from 0 to 60 in 6.4 seconds. It drove a quarter mile in 15.3 seconds at 94 mph.
