How to Install a Miata Rollbar
- 1). Lift the rear of the Miata with a jack and put it on jack stands. Take off the rear wheels using a tire iron. Unbolt the plastic fender liner from the inside of the fender with a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and put it aside. Open the top on the Miata.
- 2). Remove the clips securing the carpet to the rear deck of the Miata with a trim clip removal tool, then take the carpet off the deck. Take off the plastic cover behind the shoulder harnesses with your hands, then unbolt the lateral brace from the frame with a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Take off the door sill plates on the door jambs with a Phillips-head screwdriver.
- 3). Take off the metal cap on the top corners of the door jambs with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Unbolt the convertible top cover from under the cap with a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Take off the rubber gasket on the door jamb with your hands. Take off the clip by the seatbelt with a trim clip removal tool. Lift off the oval cover on the seat belt using your hands, and then pull the plastic piece off from the side of the pillar.
- 4). Remove the aluminum trim plate on the rear deck next to the gas tank with a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Cut holes with diameter of about 3-1/2 inches on the sides of the rear deck with tin snips to allow the rollbar to go through the rear deck. Slide the rollbar into the rear of the car and test-fit it through the holes in the rear deck. If necessary, cut additional metal out of the deck with the tin snips. Make sure the rollbar is positioned where you want it and the mounts are flush on the floor before proceeding.
- 5). Drill the mounting holes on the rollbar into the sheet metal of the Miata. Install the bolts from the kit into the mounting holes. Bolt the plates from the kit onto the other side of the mounting bolts located in the fender wells with a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. If necessary, cut the rubber stop in the fender well with a utility knife.
- 6). Trim the aluminum plate from the rear deck using tin snips, and then bolt it back in place using a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Reassemble the rest of the interior on the Miata in the reverse order of disassembly.
- 7). Replace the rear wheels. Place a jack under the vehicle, raise it off the jack stands, remove the stands and lower the car to the ground.
