ASE Test Preparation Tips

    Preparation

    • Familiarize yourself with the three types of multiple questions you will encounter in the exam so that you know the best way to approach the test: Direct/Completion questions; Technician A/Technician B questions; Except or Least Likely questions (see "Resources").

Review the ASE study guide for the area you want to be certified in. These free guides cover sample questions and a list of specific tasks and problems you should be familiar with as part of your job as an auto technician in any particular area. This will help you focus on those skills you are not familiar with.

Visit your local community college and private trade schools that may provide training or preparation for ASE certification. Furthermore, consult your local yellow pages and search the Internet for more information on courses and training available.

    Testing

    • During the test, read the questions carefully and make sure you understand what is being asked. It is easy to get confused, especially on those Except or Least Likely type of questions, where you actually have to chose the answer that does not address the problem presented by the question.

All the questions are based on actual automotive shop repair practices; draw from your own experience and knowledge of automobiles when choosing the best answer to the problem presented. Always read all the answers and remember that, regardless of the question asked, you are presented with one right and three wrong answers.

During the test, use your time efficiently. Answer all those questions you know the answers to first. Then go over the most difficult ones and take your best guess if necessary. Remember that you can always change your answer, but do not leave any answer blank, as this will count as wrong. After all, your score will only reflect the right answers.
