How to Use Volumetric Pipettes

    • 1). Place the tip of the pipette in the solution to be measured. Hold the pipette bulb in your other hand, compress the bulb, then place the opening of the bulb over the top of the pipette and release it. The expansion of the rubber bulb will create suction through the pipette that will draw the liquid into it.

    • 2). Draw the liquid level almost to the top of the pipette. Remove the bulb from the pipette. Place your finger over the opening on top of the pipette to keep the liquid from draining out.

    • 3). Remove the pipette from the solution, hold it over a sink or drain. Gradually release the pressure of your finger until the liquid level in the pipette begins to drop. Slowly bring the liquid level in the pipette to the mark that indicates the proper fill level. The liquid in the stem will form a U shape called a "miniscus." The bottom of the miniscus represents the volume level. When the miniscus reaches the mark on the stem, reapply pressure with your finger to keep the liquid level from falling below the mark.

    • 4). Place the tip of the pipette into the container to which you want to deliver the liquid, then release your finger. Allow the liquid to flow freely from the pipette. A small amount of liquid will remain in the tip. Do not try to remove this remaining liquid; the pipette was calibrated to compensate for it.
