Why Build a Cat Tower?
Why Build a Cat Tower
Why should you build a Cat Tower for your cat? Because I want one! Isn't that enough of a reason?
Cats love to climb and climbing is great exercise for us. I'm going to climb no matter what, so wouldn't it be better to build me my own cat tower?
I also want a place up high where I can hang out and supervise my world. A cat tower would be a better spot than the top shelf of your closet wouldn't it? On top of your sweaters?
A cat tower would keep me entertained. You know what they say, "a bored cat is a destructive cat".
I need the exercise. Keeping me indoors keeps me safe, but limits my activity. Those mad runs through the house at 2 a.m. Just aren't enough to work off the kibble. If I had a place to exercise I wouldn't have to keep waking you up to come for a run now would I?
What do you get out of it?
You get to watch me.
Cats like to climb. Climbing is good exercise and cats need exercise and its just plain fun. A cat needs somewhere to climb and my own cat tower would be a better choice than your body or those new drapes. We like to be high up where we can survey our world and supervise what goes on in it. A cat tower makes a great perch where we can see what's going on and be out of the way at the same time. It also makes an excellent launching pad for a surprise attack on the dog... or you.
Got you convinced? Great. I know you've seen the big expensive ones at the pet store and told me they were out of the budget. Ok, let's build one instead. You have basic woodworking skills, scraps of plywood and carpet. I have lots of imagination and supervisory skills. I'll manage the tape measure shall I?
Its my tower, of course I have to supervise!
What do you mean its not going to be as fancy as the ones in the pictures? Ok, we'll keep it simple for the first one, we can always build additions!
The basic elements of any cat tower are a sturdy base that keeps the tower stable, a pole to climb, at least one platform. You can make all sorts of additions to it like a box to hide in, several platforms for perching, a hammock. You're only limited by your cat's imagination. Since this is our first one, we'll keep it simple.
