How to Make a Storybook With Kids
- 1). Discuss with the children how many pages you would like the book to have and then divide that number by four to determine how many pieces of construction paper you need. Help the children fold the pages in half lengthwise, and then fold the pages in half again, but in the opposite direction to create a rectangular book.
- 2). Use a hole punch to create two holes through the edge of the folded pages. Punch the holes about 1/4 inch from the edge. If the pages are too thick, separate the pages and punch the holes through a few pages at a time.
- 3). Wrap the elastic band around the top of the Popsicle stick. Put the end of the elastic through the top hole of the book. Turn the book over and stretch the elastic down and through the bottom hole. Finally, insert the bottom end of the Popsicle stick into the loop of elastic.
- 4). Encourage children to create content for the storybook. If the child is an early writer, assist him with tracing words and phrases. Children can also copy the words of their favorite book onto the pages. Alternatively, offer to write what the child tells you on the pages of the book. Writers who are more advanced can write drafts of their stories on writing paper and then copy the final draft of the text onto the pages of the book.
- 5). Provide children with art supplies so they can illustrate their storybooks. Supply markers, colored pencils crayons and watercolors. Also provide old magazines, glitter, stickers, ribbon or clip art that children can glue into the book. Encourage children to write the title on the cover of the book and illustrate the cover page. Allow the pages to dry completely.
