How to Make a Custom Shirt

    • 1). Decide what color shirt you are going to use and buy the transfer paper. Black shirts use one type of transfer paper and whilte or light colored shirts use another type of transfer paper. Just be sure to buy the correct one for what you have in mind. Also make sure the transfer paper is compatible with the printer you intend to use.

    • 2). Use whatever design program you have available on your computer to transfer the idea from your imagination into reality. If you have no other program you can use Paint, which is on most any computer. You may also have the option of drawing your design on paper and scanning it into the computer. Either way is acceptable as long as you get the design the way you like it.

    • 3). Print the design. It’s always best to print a sample on computer paper before using any transfer paper. This way you know that it’s exactly what you want before wasting any of the higher priced paper. If the design is to your liking, go ahead and print it on the transfer paper. Be sure to set your printer settings to 'mirror' if you are using words in your design so they will show up the correct way once ironed on the shirt.

    • 4). Read the label to see what heat setting the iron should be on for the type of material you are using. Warm the iron to the proper heat setting. Use a pillow case on top of a table for best results when doing the actual ironing. Ironing boards are often shaky and therefore not advisable. The transfer paper will come with instructions on getting the design from the paper and onto your custom shirt in case you need help.

    • 5). After the ironed on design has cooled you can peel the transfer paper off. Then your custom shirt is finished and ready for wear.
