During World War 2, when silk became scarce, nylon was used as an alternative material for some products containing silk.
In later years, it was commonly used as substitute for silk in manufacturing bedding.
Although they're two different materials, sometimes it's difficult to identify which is which.
Should you rather choose the other one, their distinguishing characteristic must be familiar to you.
Silk is one of the strongest natural fibers.
Also, since it has flat- surface fibrils that reflect light that gives its natural shine, it is lustrous to use as materials in different products.
Its high absorbency can trap the heat close to the body giving us comfort during the cold season.
On the other hand, it can also absorb and breathes the moisture from our sweat keeping us cool during summer.
Silk can easily absorb dye well making it more colorful.
Although, it has many advantages, this fiber could not escape from its downside.
Its elastic property is almost poor, thus when elongated, remains stretched and can also weaken when exposed to too much heat.
Nylon is one of the most useful synthetic fibers.
Almost everything surrounds us is made of nylon.
It is strong and tough, durable and can resist exposure to heat and changes in the weather.
It's also waterproof, therefore, it dries easily because the water cannot penetrate on the surface too long.
It could melt when subject to heat, acids ad other harsh chemicals.
If you're wondering whether you bought bedding made of silk or nylon, you should check the feel of the fabric in your skin.
Silk tends to make you feel more comfortable since it is made of natural fibers compared to the synthetic component of nylon.
Aside from it, you could also distinguish them from their color; silk is almost crystal in appearance, has a natural shine while nylon is milky almost white or colorless.
Silk can be burnt while nylon can easily melt.
Nylon, on the other hand, is much cheaper than silk that is why most people who want to save money chooses nylon.
But when it comes to other benefits, silk is much better than nylon.
It is naturally hypoallergenic and can assist sensitive skin.
Silk can also control thermal and humidity, breathable, and are safe for babies.
It is also easy to wash and durable.
Both of them have the same advantages and disadvantages.
Regardless of the material, the most important thing is to choose a fabric that is comfortable for you.
