How to Make Dramatic Curtains With Taffeta
- 1). Measure the window to calculate the curtain length, determining how far past the bottom of the window the curtain will end. Add 6 inches for the top and the bottom hems.
- 2). Measure the window to determine the curtain panel width, for a two-panel treatment that will open in the center. For each panel, measure half the window's width and multiply by 2, adding 6 inches for side hems. These measurements will determine your yardage needed for this project.
- 3). Cut the fabric to the determined measurements and hem sides, top and bottom by folding edges over
1-1/2 inches twice, pinning hems in place, and sewing with a straight stitch. - 4). Make tab tops by cutting tab fabric pieces 3 inches wide and 12 inches long. A standard window panel will have six tabs.
- 5). Cut 10-inch pieces of fusible webbing and fuse them to the center of the tabs on the wrong side of the fabric. Fold side, top and bottom tab edges in over the webbing and fuse.
- 6). Pin tabs to the top of curtain panel, spacing them evenly while placing the first and last tabs at the edges of the panel. Attach the tabs to the curtain top edge 2 inches down from the edge, by hand sewing the buttons in place through the layers of the tab top front, curtain and tab top back.
- 7). Cut the beaded fringe to the measurement of the panel width. Pin the beaded fringe, which is attached to seam binding, to the hem on the wrong side of the curtain panel. Make sure the fringe is sufficiently visible and hand sew the fringe to the panels with a straight stitch.
