There are no official results yet on what vitamins is the best to improve our memory. But there are a lot of these that are good in enhancing process of our memory. Every vitamin has its unique benefits and effects and there are also its own limitations.

If you are deciding on what vitamin to take, you have to consider first the reason of your memory loss and if it is due to memory deficiency, then you can solve it easily by taking supplements to augment the deficiency. There are vitamins that are known to improve memory and these are vitamins E, C, B1, B6, B9, and B12.

Vitamins E and C are antioxidants which are known to boost immune system, slow down the aging of brain, and neutralize or delay the actions of free radicals. If the immune system is sound, people will not get sick. Some sickness leads to stress then depression and eventually memory loss. These vitamins also neutralize free radicals, known as oxidative substances which are the main cause of stroke or brain cancer leading to memory loss.

Moreover, the vitamins from B complex are known to improve memory because these protect the central nervous system therefore any deficit with these lead to memory loss. If vitamin B6 is deficient, there will be damage on the nerves which results to depression and other severe neural problems. Lack of vitamin B12 (also known as cobalamine) also results to problems in the nervous system. People will suffer from anemia if they have B12 deficiency. Vitamin B9 or folic acid or folate is also needed to avoid anemia. This vitamin is given to pregnant women for the brain development of the fetus.

One herbal supplement, which is popular to Chinese, is the Gingko Biloba extracts. The Chinese had been using Gingko Biloba for so many years. Extracts from its leaves are known for memory enhancer herbal supplement. There are several studies done about the wonderful effects of this supplement. They said that this increases blood circulation into the brain which enhances memory. Aside from curing memory loss, Alzheimer's disease, and dementia, it is also used to cure asthma, fatigue, disease on the peripheral artery, and many circulatory problems. Thus, this becomes one of the leading herbal supplements in the markets of Europe and even United States.     

Though Gingko Biloba extracts may effectively improve the overall cognitive functions especially for the older adults, it fails to slow down the age related memory loss. There is a six year clinical study which found out that memory loss that is age related associated with impairment on memory, Alzheimer's disease, and dementia are not effectively slowed down by Gingko Biloba. With this, American doctors concluded that this is not yet the best memory herb that scientists may claim for but, American drug experts said they had witnessed the effective results on patients both in cognitive functions and memory for those who had regularly used Gingko Biloba.
