Salmon River Heaven
Salmon River Heaven
I recently went fishing on the Salmon River in Altmar, New York. I live in Brooklyn New York and went with 3 other fishermen from New Jersey. The trip was about 300 miles and being the trip was in October the colors of the foliage was spectacular.
We stayed at the Tinker Tavern Lodge and Guide Service. They are just 3 minutes from the Salmon River and 15 minutes from Lake Ontario. The lodge is run my Scott Glazier and his wife Tanya. They are a small but growing lodge, they are down to earth, very friendly and will do whatever it takes to make your stay the best it can be.
The cabin we stayed in slept 4 and also had a couch. It is of course heated, with a full bathroom with shower, if you forget any toiletries they are stocked with tooth brush and paste, deodorant, shampoo and Q tips. The cabin has Satellite TV, Refrigerator, Microwave, and most important a coffee maker with free coffee supplied. There is a table and chairs setup with a deck of cards and packaged nuts, cookies, potato chips, etc.
Scott is a Licensed Guide and he can find both the fish and the game. You can either fish from a Drift Boat or Wading. We choose Wading in the flowing river, at this time of year the fish are swimming upstream to spawn. With Scott's knowledge of the Salmon River and his tips (which he will readily share) we all caught (landed) at least 2 Salmon with many more hooked, and one of us (not me) landed 4 Salmon. These fish averaged in the mid teens with the largest about 24lbs. Now that's Salmon Heaven!
If I remember correctly Scott has about 36 acres of wooded land and could be your hunting guide, while we were there you could hear Ducks making a ruckus. He offers private land hunting for Whitetail, Coyote, Duck and Geese just steps from your cabin.
Also available is over 90 miles of ATV trails accessed right from your cabin. You can go Hiking, Biking, Kayaking and Canoeing. There are also Winter sports to do such as Snowmobiling, Cross Country Skiing and Ice Climbing.
If you would like more information you can visit their website at: http://www.tinkertavernlodge.com you can also call at 315-298-3143 or 413-320-5429.
I am not an Author, just a fisherman who has fished in many different States and several different countries who found the Tinker Tavern Lodge and the Salmon River to indeed be SALMON HEAVEN.
If you mention this article when booking your trip you and your party will all get a FREE fly that would be appropriate for the time of year you are fishing.
