- 1). Prime and paint or stain three 84-inch tall decorative wooden shutters to suit your room’s décor. Slatted, paneled or louvered shutters work for this project. Let the finish dry completely.
- 2). Measure and mark one shutter 42 inches from the top along both outside edges. Measure and mark both side edges of the same shutter 16 inches from the top and 16 inches from the bottom. Measure and mark the same dimensions on the left side of one remaining shutter and on the right side of the other remaining shutter. The marks are for the center points for the hinges.
- 3). Center and attach one side of a 3-inch long decorative hinge over each mark on the shutter with both sides marked. Attach the left side of the hinges to the right side of the shutter and the right side of the hinges to the left side of the shutter. This shutter is the center panel for the room divider.
- 4). Lay the shutter with the hinges face up on a flat surface. Lay the shutter with the marks on the left to the right of the hinged shutter. Fit the edge of the right shutter beneath the hinges. Line up the marks on the right shutter with the hinges attached to the center room-divider panel. Insert screws to attach the hinges to the right shutter.
- 5). Follow the process to position the left side shutter on the opposite side of the center room-divider panel. Attach the hinges.
- 6). Measure and mark the bottom edge of each shutter panel, 8 inches from the outside edge of the panel. Attach a decorative metal foot to each mark. Depending on the style of the metal feet you chose, you may need to drill a small hole through the bottom edge of the wooden shutter panel to insert the feet. If you do drill, squirt waterproof construction adhesive into the drilled hole prior to inserting the metal dowel attached to the feet.
