Cut several hearts out of the scratch paper until you're satisfied with the shape and size. If you have a heart stencil, you may use it instead. Trace the heart twice on the oak tag. Select two contrasting colors of construction paper and trace the heart on each piece. Cut the hearts out. You should have two oak tag hearts and two construction paper hearts. Stack the hearts to ensure they are all the same size. Trim off any ragged or misaligned edges. - 2

Lay the ruler across one of the hearts. Use your pencil to draw small dots at even intervals along the line. These intervals will differ according to the size of the heart and your personal preferences. Turn the ruler and measure one interval down from two dots in the dotted line. Turn the ruler again and lay it across the two dots so that they align with the interval measurements. Draw in the rest of the intervals. You should now have two parallel dotted lines. Turn your ruler so it is perpendicular with the lines. Line each vertical pair of dots up with the intervals on the ruler and mark each interval. Draw horizontal and vertical lines through each line of dots, forming an even grid across the heart. - 3

Stack the heart with with grid lines on top of the other construction-paper heart. Hold them firmly in place and use the scissors or sliding paper cutter to cut along grid lines to ensure a straight cut. Remove each grid square as soon as it is cut, keeping track of which part of the heart each piece represents. When you are done cutting the pieces out, glue them to the oak tag hearts in alternating colors, making a checkerboard pattern.
