As we become more advanced in our singing, it becomes important to learn how to break a song down, to interpret what a song says. It's really important that you look at the lyrics, and that you look at the composition under the lyrics. You might look at are the lyrics happy, but the actual composition is sad? Are the lyrics fast but the composition is slow? The composition is the music underneath the lyrics. Now, an important way to do this, a good way to do this, is to simply write your lyrics down and circle the words that are important. It's important to know what it is you're singing. Then, listen to the accompaniment and see if that matches. If you want an example, take a look at "This Little Light of Mine". Now, we know for sure that "little light" is important. Why? It's an all caps. So, when they wrote the lyrics to this song, they felt that "little light" was really important. Then, as you go on, you say to yourself, what else is important? Well, "this little light of mine, I'm going to let it shine", mine and shine rhyme and, it's really what the song is about. So, you're going to want to circle "little light" and "shine". "I'm going to let it shine". Now, if you were to play this music, you would hear that it's happy and bright, it fits with what we are saying.
