Draw a template on a piece of manila folder for the outline of the piece, as well as the shape to be inlaid (the "window"). Choose something like a circle, a square or a star---something precise. Cut this out

    • 3). Place the template on the leather and cut it out with your leather shears. Use the X-acto knife near the edges of the inlay window for precision. Skive, or pare down, the leather by running the skiver gently along the edges, applying enough pressure to thin out the leather without piercing it. This will allow the inlaid piece of leather to fit flush.

    • 4). Choose an additional piece of leather to be the inlaid piece -- go for contrast here. Pick a different stain of leather or a different texture. Cut this to loosely fit behind the window.

    • 5). Place the piece facing front-side-down on newspaper. Cover the edges around the window generously with rubber cement. Place your chosen inlaid piece carefully into the window, pressing down so that the rubber cement sticks.
