Tips on Painting Vinyl Shutters

    • 1). Wash the vinyl shutters with a water-based degreaser, using a sponge. Rinse the shutters with wet rags.

    • 2). Abrade the shutters to promote adhesion. Sand the vinyl until it feels coarse.

    • 3). Protect areas you do not want painted. Meticulously apply painter's tape and masking paper to all adjacent surfaces. Place dropcloths on the ground below the window.

    • 4). Coat the vinyl shutters with primer, using a 2- to 3-inch polyester paintbrush. Brush in a horizontal motion, watching closely for any runs and drips. Wait two hours for the shutters to dry.

    • 5). Wash your polyester brush with water.

    • 6). Coat interior vinyl shutters with semi-gloss or gloss latex paint, using the clean polyester paintbrush. Use an acrylic latex paint on exterior shutters. Apply the final finish coat just as you did the primer. Wait two hours for the shutters to dry.
