    Species

    • There are many species of saltwater fish. The halibut and saltwater salmon rank near the top of both commercial and recreational anglers, but there are many others, as well. Ling cod, rockfish, and cod are among the most popular of the rest, and are frequently caught by saltwater anglers.

    Recreational Fishing

    • Anglers are required to have a sports fishing license to fish saltwater, which as of 2010 was $24 for residents and varies for non residents based on length of time. These licenses vary from $20 for a one day license to $145 for a full year license for a non resident. Most professional saltwater charters concentrate specifically on halibut.

    Commercial Fishing

    • Commercial fishing is a major part of Alaska's economy. Halibut, salmon, and cod are the most sought after fish. In Alaska, commercial fishing is also an umbrella term that includes non fish species such as king crab.

    Crabbing

    • The Discovery Channel show "The Deadliest Catch" brought crab fishing to the general public. Crab fishing involves several different seasons in Alaska, and is still a major pat of the fishing economy. This job is also considered one of the most dangerous in the country.

    Warnings

    • Any ocean fishing done for recreational sports fishing around Alaska should be done on a professional charter. An experienced captain or guide will know when the waters are too rough, and where to turn for shelter if the boat gets caught. The waters get get rough very quickly so always wear a life vest and be cautious out on the water.
