How Does a Zipper Work?

    Zippers in History

    • Zippers have an important role in modern fashion, ever since their invention approximately 80 years ago. Zippers were hard to sell to the public at first, but the fashion and magazine industry convinced consumers that they were necessary, fun and worthwhile to have to keep outfits together.

    How it All Works Together

    • The wedge and the hook are the foundations for making a zipper work. A lot of hooks are designed in a row for each side of a zipper. The rows are made up of "teeth" that attach to the other side. When the force of the wedge latches both sides to each other, the opening in a garment is closed by the force of the wedge.

    Usefulness

    • The zipper is best suited for jackets, coats or pants, especially blue jeans. The zipper is durable and edgy, and usually not presentable for dainty front wear. Although zippers are common for holding together the back of a formal dress (and will often be dyed to match the material of a dress), zippers are probably more commonly associated with the denim jeans.
