How to Create a Disney Princess Room
- 1). Paint the walls of your room in bright pastel shades like light pink, bright blue, mint green or golden yellow. Draw inspiration from Rapunzel, Disney's princess from the 2010 film "Tangled" and paint one wall with a bright mural depicting starry skies, a castle on a hill or impressionistic swirls of color. If painting the walls isn't an option, purchase or sew long curtains in similar bright shades. The large swaths of fabric will provide a similar impact and deliver large doses of color. Plastic wall decals can be applied to walls for color and visual interest, and can be easily removed without damaging the walls.
- 2). Hang panels of sheer fabric from the ceiling above the bed, or secure gathered panels to the wall behind the bed and drape on either side, to create a quick and easy princess canopy. String silk roses on lengths of monofilament line and hang around the bed to create the illusion of magical floating roses like the one in Belle's castle in "Beauty and the Beast." Instead of roses, consider hanging a dream catcher above the bed draperies for a Pocahontas-inspired touch. Twinkle lights strung around the room or over the bed give the room a fairy tale glow.
- 3). Swap out a generic light fixture for a customized chandelier that pays tribute to your child's favorite Disney princesses. You can find inexpensive chandeliers at thrift and home improvement stores; the addition of metallic spray paint, vintage chandelier crystals found in antique stores and special charms elevates even the most basic light fixture into something special. Seashells, either left natural or painted to match the chandelier, can be hung from the arms of the light fixture for a light worthy of Ariel's grotto in "The Little Mermaid." Forks, spoons and dishes from a tea-set recall the finale of "Be Our Guest" from "Beauty and the Beast." Secure all items carefully to avoid injuring your child with falling flatware or wayward seashells.
- 4). Add accessories and accents that recall the world of Disney princesses. A Persian-style rug on the floor is similar to the magic carpet that whisks Princess Jasmine to a whole new world in "Aladdin." A white metal birdcage with several artificial birds, suspended from the ceiling near the closet, recalls the feathered friends who helped Cinderella dress for the ball in the classic eponymous cartoon. A tea set painted with cherry blossoms is similar to one that Chinese princess Mulan might use, while a kitchen play set recalls the love of cooking shared by princesses Snow White and Tiana from "The Princess and the Frog." Princess-worthy touches, such as tiaras and a trunk of dress-up clothes, are fun, decorative and encourage your princess to dream up a fairy-tale of her own.
