Does Willpower Work With Trying to Overcome Your Addiction?

103 3
Will willpower be what helps you finally be able to overcome your drug, alcohol or food addiction? I can tell you that the answer is probably not.
I have rarely seen this happen.
I say rarely because I remember a man I met at an AA meeting years ago.
He had quit drinking for 20 years yet he was still talking about how he needed meetings every day and if he didn't go to a meeting every day there was a good chance he would drink.
I thought "a good chance he would drink?" He'd been sober for 20 years and to think that he believed if he didn't go to an AA meeting every day he might slip and drink? I remember listening to him talk and thinking what a sad situation this was.
My take on it was that he was in a prison for all these years.
I think AA is a great organization-I really do-but this man seemed to live in a state of panic.
But he wasn't drinking and to him not drinking was probably the most important thing for him.
I guess whatever it takes for this man not to drink.
I think that to overcome an addiction one needs not to fight the addiction but forcefully say to the addiction "NO! You're not going to run my life anymore!" Then really try to hear those words.
Mean them! There is so much power in words.
But you have to believe the words.
I'm always reminded of the verse in the Bible where Jesus said, "Get thee behind me Satan.
" When you're serious about quitting..
..
say NO to the addiction, take action..
..
then live the one life you have...
and know that after awhile it gets easier and easier and then one day you realize you haven't thought about that darn addiction you used to have for a long time..
...
yep, it does fade away, thank God.
I know, I've quit 3 myself.
