Instructions for Drawing Human Hands
- 1). Place your own hand on the table and use it as a reference. Keep the formation of your hand simple. Bend your fingers slightly, extend your thumb, then raise the edge of your hand closest to you off the table just slightly. This will give you a reference that isn't too difficult to replicate.
- 2). Draw the outline of your hand while you look at it. Use a pencil and draw the outline lightly. Check the outline to make sure the perspective of your fingers is correct. You only need your hand for the outline. The rest is in the shading and crease lines.
- 3). Darken the outline of your hand, then apply small lines on the knuckles. These lines will help give definition to the fingers. Sketch the fingernails in next. Then add light shading to the fingernails, leaving some of the white of the paper showing through.
- 4). Add shading in the crook between the thumb and index finger. Don't make the shading too dark. Shade at a 45-degree angle very lightly to add separation of the thumb and index finger. Draw the veins on top of the hand. For thinner veins, lightly-sketched lines will do. For thicker veins, add a darker line along the edges to help lift it away from the top of the hand.
