How to Hem Staight Leg Jeans for Tennis Shoes
- 1). Put on the jeans with sneakers and have a friend measure with a ruler, about 1 1/2 inches from the ground. Cuff the pants to this length and look them over in the mirror to make sure they are even. Pin the pant legs to secure them, before taking them off.
- 2). Lay the jeans on a table and mark the edge of the cuff with a piece of tailor's chalk to indicate the new hemline. These markings should be on the wrong side of the fabric. Remove the pins, unfold the cuffs and turn the pants inside-out. Next, pin through the front and back of the jeans, to keep the fabric from shifting.
- 3). Use chalk lines as a guide to draw one line from the side seams to the inseams. Draw another parallel line 1 inch lower than the hemline which will account for the seam allowance. Cut through both layers of the pant with a pair of scissors.
- 4). Fold bottom edge of the jeans 1/4 inch and pin to keep in place. Use an iron to create a sharp crease along the folded edge. Then, sew around the pant legs, about 1/8-inch away from the fold. This will keep the edge of the denim from unraveling or fraying, once it is hemmed.
- 5). Measure and fold bottom of the jeans 3/4 inches away from the stitched edge. Secure the fold, by pinning around the bottom of each leg. Iron the folds, to help secure the hemline, before top stitching it into place. The top stitching should be about 1/2 inch away from the fold, which will complete the new hemline.
