You will notice when you unwind the replacement string that one end has a reinforced eyelet.

Adjust the tension so the string becomes straightened and under slight tension.

What you are going to do next, is to blow through the tube related to the string you are replacing and increase that strings tension to match the note from the pitch pipe.

It will take a number of adjustments to get this right.
You should hear the sound change as you move the winder.
