Painting Over Powdered Paint

    Clean Surface

    • Remove any surface contamination on the item to be painted. The surface should be free of dirt, grease and oil. You can use an oil emulsifying detergent on the surface. Follow manufacturer instructions when using the detergent. Rinse the surface with water after using the detergent. The water should wet the surface if it is free of contamination.

    Corrosive Products

    • Remove corrosive products on the item’s surface. Do this mechanically to remove any chalky deposits. If there is some white rust on the surface, use an abrasive pad to clean it. You will need a power tool to remove red rust on the surface. Get rid of all the dust on the surface before you start painting.

    Adhesion

    • The powdered paint should adhere to the item’s surface. Adhesion can deteriorate over time, therefore you should examine the surface carefully. Carry out an adhesion test on the surface to determine if you should proceed with the painting process. If the powdered paint fails the test, you have to remove it and apply another base. If the surface passes the test, you should abrade it using a nylon pad. This will remove any chalkiness or gloss on the item, and give you a uniform surface for a new coat of paint.

    Prime Surface

    • After abrading the surface, apply some primer on it. The surface should be dry and free of contaminants before you apply the primer. The primer has to be applied as soon as you prepare the surface before any contamination or oxidation takes place.

    Painting

    • When the primer cures, paint the surface using thermosetting polyurethane, polyester, acrylic or epoxy enamels. You can also use an aerosol spray paint on the surface, however, you may not get the same kind of quality compared to the thermosetting enamels. The paint will adhere on the powdered paint as long as you use the right type. Your vendor can recommend the best paint to use on the surface.
