How to Repair 12 Inch Vinyl

    • 1). Use a needle to fix a scratch. If your record is skipping, simply place the record on the turntable to see where the skip occurs. Use the needle to gently scratch the surface of the record, leading the groove before the skip into the section just ahead of it. You may need to do this four or five times to create a playable record.

    • 2). Fixing a warped record is a little more complicated. First, purchase two sheets of glass larger than your vinyl and as thick as you can afford.

    • 3). Preheat your oven to 175 degrees.

    • 4). Sandwich the vinyl record between two sheets of glass.

    • 5). Place the "vinyl sandwich" in the oven for 1-2 minutes and remove promptly. Set the glass and vinyl on a table or countertop.

    • 6). Place a heavy, nonflammable object on top on the glass plates and allow to cool completely.

    • 7). Repeat this process until the warp has been pressed out.

    • 8). Convert your vinyl to digital format. You can purchase an inexpensive USB turntable for this purpose on a website such as ThinkGeek (see Resources). You can then edit the digital track with software to remove any skipping or distortion.
