- 1). Park your machine outside on a level surface. Turn the unit off and take the key out of the ignition if your machine uses a key. If you machine has a parking brake, set it now.
- 2). Unplug the spark plug wire from the spark plug with your fingers. Find the fuel filter for your engine. The fuel filter is between the fuel tank and the carburetor. It has a rubber fuel line attaching to each end. Place a rag under the filter to catch any residual gas that escapes when you disconnect it from the fuel lines.
- 3). Place line clamps over each fuel line, 2 inches away from the filter. Line clamps are available at auto parts stores. Most look like large clothes pins. The clamp over the line, crimping off the fuel flow. If you do not have line clamps, siphon the fuel from the fuel tank into a gas container with a hand siphon.
- 4). Loosen the hose clamps securing the fuel line to the fuel filter with a Phillips-head screwdriver, if your unit uses hose clamps. Pull the line away from the filter with your fingers. The lines fit over tapered nipples on each end of the filter, and require some force to remove.
- 5). Insert the lines over the nipples on the new filter. The filter has an arrow pointing the direction of fuel flow. When installing, the arrow should point away from the fuel tank. Push the lines until the ends are flush against the body of the filter. Tighten the clamp screws with the screwdriver, if your hoses use clamps. Unclip the line clamps from the fuel lines.
- 6). Wipe up any spilled fuel with the rags. Fill the fuel tank with gas. Push the spark plug wire onto the spark plug until it locks into place.
