How to Create Mesh Hair in Maya

104 2
    • 1). Subdivide the head of the image model you've selected to work on. The model is an image of a head that allows you to build the hair around it and on top of it. Select the "Subdivide Surfaces" option, which sections the head into various quadrants of view.

    • 2). Create a Nurbs Hair Skull on top of the head. You cannot paint the hair onto the model unless you first build the hair skull. Make the Nurbs Hair Skull by forming a sphere directly onto the skull, so that the sphere is the same shape as the skull and fits within the outline.

    • 3). Select the Nurbs Curves program in Maya to draw the hair. Use the mouse to draw the direction of the hair, such as starting from the scalp and moving out, down or back.

    • 4). Open the PaintFX brush in Maya. Select the appropriate brush for the length of hair you want to draw. The options are short, medium or long hair brushes.

    • 5). Select the Paints Effects menu option, and click on the icon for Make Paintable. Apply the first stroke of hair onto the Nurbs Skull with the paintbrush. Choose the base mesh to use for the hair. The base mesh provides you with a blueprint of the rows and columns necessary for creating the rest of the hair.

    • 6). Continue drawing the hair onto the surface of the scalp. The hair will stand straight out from the mesh lines. Change the flow of the hair by going back into the Paints Effects option and selecting Set Control Curves, which will fill in the hair and make it grow out to match the curves that you drew in Step 3.
