How to Dress Kids for 30 Degree Weather
- 1). Put a layer of thermal undergarments under your child's regular clothes to keep him dry and prevent moisture from reaching the skin while playing.
- 2). Put a thin, comfortable shirt that doesn't absorb moisture on over the thermals. Avoid fabrics such as cotton and linen, since they can increase the hypothermia as they absorb the snow and get soaked. Don't put children in thick sweatshirts with hoods, since it increases bulk and makes it difficult to move.
- 3). Add a thick jacket or coat to complete the upper body. Select a coat that has a waterproof or water-resistant outer layer, especially if your child is going to be participating in activities such as snowboarding, sledding or playing in the snow and is likely to get wet.
- 4). Protect your child's mouth and neck from the bitter cold with a scarf, especially when the winds are fierce. Tuck the scarf into his jacket to make it stay in position better. Teach him to pull it up over his mouth for additional warmth.
- 5). Put a hat on his head to prevent heat from escaping. Add ear muffs if the hat doesn't have ear flaps built into it.
- 6). Don't forget gloves or mittens to keep his hands warm while he throws snowballs at his friends or builds a snow fort. Choose a water-resistant or waterproof material if you know he's going to be doing more than walking to the bus stop.
- 7). Put him in jeans or thick sweatpants. If he's going to be playing in the snow actively, add some waterproof or water-resistant snow pants on top of the jeans or sweats.
- 8). Teach him to keep his feet warm with winter boots. Select a pair with a thick inner lining to keep his feet warmer while running through the snow.
