How to Shop for Dress Wear
- 1). Make sure you're clear on the dress expectations if you are purchasing an outfit for an upcoming event. If you received an invitation, it will usually state the dress code as black tie, semi-formal, festive, dressy casual or business casual. If you are unsure, ask the host.
- 2). Get the right fit. Even the priciest of dress wear won't have that wow effect if the outfit is too tight or makes you look like the incredible shrinking person. This can especially be a problem for jackets, pants and dresses. Ask for assistance from a salesperson, or bring along an honest friend. If you decide to purchase an item, take advantage of in-store alterations if they're available, or take it to your local tailor.
- 3). Consider fabrics. Dress wear is typically made of finer fabrics such as silk or lace. You will want to make sure to choose a fabric that is going to keep you comfortable with the season. For example, if you are attending an outdoor wedding in July and want to wear a suit, you're probably better off going with linen as opposed to wool.
- 4). Check a multisided mirror. Most stores have these just outside the dressing room if not within them. A three-sided mirror allows you to see the sides and back, so you can get the most flattering fit all the way around.
- 5). Bring your shoes and accessories to the store to get a complete picture of the look and to make sure the colors all go together. This is especially important for shoes if you are getting alterations. Pants or a dress would need to be hemmed at a different length for sky-high stilettos than they would with the ballet flats you wore to shop in.
