Grants for Independent Black Filmmakers
- The National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC) assists black filmmakers with funding for films and documentaries. Founded in 1979, the NBCP has not only provided African-American film artists with the funding needed for their projects, but also trained and mentored those who wish to get involved in the film media. All requests for funding go directly through the organization and the average funding amount is $50,000.
- The Garrett Scott Documentary Development Grant awards first-time documentary filmmakers with travel expenses to the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, where they are taught by experienced filmmakers and attended classes dedicated to helping them grow as filmmakers. The grant was created to honor Garrett Scott, who, without any formal training had a short but memorable career as an independent documentary filmmaker. Scott's visionary works won prizes at the Independent Spirit Awards and Full Frame, but his life was cut short when he died of a heart attack at age 37.
- Worldstudio AIGA Scholarships provides minorities and disadvantaged individuals with filmmaker scholarships. Supported by companies, and organizations, the AIGA scholarships focus on young artists trying to make a difference in the world with their work. To qualify, film students must retain at least a 2.0 GPA, be a resident of the United States and plan to enter into a career in one of the scholarship's designated creative professions. While the scholarship concentrates on minority artists, those who show financial need are also encouraged to apply.
- Since its debut in 1999, Creative Capital has financial and professional support to filmmakers and independent artists who wish to grow in their chosen profession. Unlike many grant programs, Creative Capital works with the artists long-term, allowing filmmakers to follow mentorship programs, learn filmmaking techniques and grow as professionals. With its professional development program, Creative Capital not only gives young black filmmakers a head start, but also teaches them how to sustain their careers in the future.
