How to Grow Long Hair If It's Brittle

    • 1). Trim your hair every four to six weeks. Split ends begin at the tip and move upward, dividing the strand and reducing the overall quality of your locks. Regularly removing these split ends lets your hair continue to grow healthfully, which helps you achieve longer hair faster than letting the split ends travel up your hair.

    • 2). Condition your hair in the shower. While conditioner won't repair split ends or frayed cuticles, it helps protect your hair from pollutants, Sun, heat and dry weather. Squeeze the water from your hair after shampooing and apply conditioner to the last 4 inches to 5 inches of your tresses. Let the conditioner sit while you wash your face or shave your legs. Rinse the conditioner out with cool water right before exiting the shower. The few extra minutes allow your strands to absorb the conditioning treatment.

    • 3). Eat healthy, nutrient-dense foods, such as avocados, almonds and bananas. Without proper nutrition, hair becomes brittle and falls out prematurely. This is why individuals suffering from eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulimia, have noticeably sparse, brittle hair.

    • 4). Detangle your hair using a wide-toothed comb instead of a bristle brush or fine-toothed comb. Also, avoid combing your hair when it's soaking wet, as this increases the risk of premature breakage.

    • 5). Avoid using chemical treatments, such as hair dye, straightening irons and even blow dryers, as these processes strain and damage your hair. Damaged hair splits more easily than healthy strands, which necessitates more frequent trimming and negates your efforts to increase your hair length.
