Techniques for Applying Eyelash Extensions

    Applying the Extensions

    • Wash and rinse your hands well, and be sure your work area and tweezers are clean. Remember: You will be working with your eyes, and do not want to get an infection. Apply paper adhesive tape (the kind used to secure dressings to sensitive skin) to your bottom lashes. This will keep them out of the way, making it easier to see your top lashes; the paper tape will not irritate your skin.

Follow the directions in the kit for preparing and mixing the glue, if necessary. Then place one drop on a clean, shiny surface. An old compact or hand mirror is a good thing to use. Using a pair of curved tweezers, start with the left eye, and separate one natural lash from the other lashes. Make sure you only have one lash.

Pick up an eyelash extension with straight tweezers, and dip approximately a third to a half of the flat end into the glue. Attach the extension to the segregated natural lash, leaving a distance of 0.5 to 1mm between the extension and the root of the natural lash. Repeat on the right eye, and continue to alternate from left eye to right eye until all the extensions are applied.

    Important Tips

    • Your lashes should be as straight as possible. Do not curl them or have them curled prior to applying your extensions. Remove all eye makeup, including mascara, from your eyes and eyelashes. In fact, it is a good idea to remove all makeup from your eyes and face, and make sure your skin is clean.

A good length for eyelash extensions is a third to a half longer than your natural length. Any longer and the application process may not be successful. Smooth your eyelashes with an eyelash comb after you have completely finished applying all extensions. This will ensure that none of them are sticking together.

    Aftercare

    • In order for the eyelash extensions to bond properly and to last as long as possible, you need to follow specific guidelines: Do not wet the lashes, and avoid standing near steaming hot water. Do not touch your eyes any more than necessary; do not wear mascara or curl the extensions for the first 24 hours. After the first 24 hours have passed, you can do a few more things with your extensions, but you still should not use makeup remover. Instead use a cotton swab soaked in plain water to remove your eye makeup. Use only a hand curler if you want to curl your lashes, and then apply only water-based mascara if you feel you need it.
