Constable Paintings

John Constable is one of the finest British painters and his work was consistent both in quality and content, with Constable paintings covering the British landscape from a variety of locations, always with the same approach which his fans grew to love. This article looks deeply into the career of this famous British painter and considers which to be his best paintings of all.

The Haywain remains Constable's best known work but there were many others from a long career which drew attention to other beautiful locations in the UK, with most being in Suffolk where the artist lived and loved most to paint. Constable is held in high regard even today and is seen as a crucial landscape painter who helped make this art genre something which deserved to be in the mainstream when previously it had not been. Many artists traditionally have travelled regularly in order to spread their skills and challenge themselves as much as possible but Constable was an artist who always liked to stick to whatever he had done before and not to experiment too much.

British art has struggled against the likes of Italian masters from the Renaissance and the later changes which happened in the centuries closely after the Middle Ages but there is now a great heritage in this area from Britain going back several centuries and the earliest contributors to this change included John Constable plus several other significant artists. Notable artists who helped to lift British art included Thomas Gainsborough, William Hogarth, Sir Joshua Reynolds and JMW Turner as mentioned elsewhere in this article. John Constable is the best known of all for landscape painting and his work captured the scenic area of Suffolk perfectly.

We can conclude that English artist John Constable helped to put the Suffolk countryside on the map through his charming paintings which kept a consistent style throughout his career which achieved great success and gave little reason for variety or experimentation. Constable is seen alongside JMW Turner as being absolutely crucial for not only British art in general, but specifically landscape painting which had previously not been rated as important compared to many other art genres such as portraits and allegorical works. With so much interest now in landscape painting, it seems incredible to consider that there were times before that did not rate these artists as highly, and so it underlines the importance of painters like Constable and Turner.
