How to Help a Child With ADHD
If you have a child with ADHD there are things you can do to help your child.
First make sure he/she has the proper diagnosis.
To do this, call your doctor.
He or she will give you directions on how to get started.
Your child's school may have a psychologist and the psychologist can perform ADHD testing.
While the testing is going on you, the teachers, and other people close to the suspected ADHD child can fill out important forms.
The forms will have questions on your child's behavior.
Fill out the form as honestly as you can.
Do not be surprised if your child's teachers forms come back with worse behaviors than your forms do.
This does not mean the teachers are overreacting.
It means at school your child must be in a more structured environment than at home.
Also, more is expected of your child at school.
Lastly, your child is probably doing more things at home that he/she enjoys than learning school work.
If the child is bored with the subject the teacher is discussing, he/she will fidget more, be more inattentive and not be able to follow directions.
All of these symptoms are of no fault to your child that may have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
To help your child you may change his/her diet.
Have your child eat a diet rich in protein, Omega-3 fatty acids, and complex carbohydrates.
Foods rich in protein include nuts, peanut butter, meats, cheese, fruits (oranges, tangerines, pears, apples, grapefruit, and kiwi).
Omega-3 fatty acids include salmon, white fish, tuna fish, walnuts, Brazil nuts, and olive oil.
Your child should eat complex carbs.
The fruits listed above contain complex carbs as do a lot of vegetables.
Avoid sugary foods that are simple carbs such as high sugar cereals, honey, candy and corn syrup.
The toughest one on this list will be the corn syrup.
Read labels as many foods contain corn syrup that you would not think would have the product in it.
Also, eliminate white rice, potatoes without the skin on, breads and items with white flour in.
Another way to help your child with ADHD is to get out and exercise twenty to thirty minutes per day.
Exercise may help with your ADHD child's impulsiveness.
Be organized yourself.
Teach your child organization.
This will be a wonderful lifelong lesson to teach the child with ADHD.
By being organized your home will run smoother and you will be on time for appointments, school and functions easing stress in your family's life.
Help your ADHD child by having your home life more structured as in have your child in a routine.
This will make life easier on your ADHD child.
You may want to have your child put on medication if the above measures do not work.
