Elderly Law & Restraining Orders
- A restraining order is a court order that requires a party to do, or refrain from doing, a specified action. Restraining orders are issued by the court and are not only used to protect people from violence, abuse and neglect, but can also protect from asset loss.
- In the United States, the Elder Justice Act (EJA) created the Adult Protective Services program (APS) to provide funding for social services to abused, neglected or exploited elderly and vulnerable adults. APS is typically administered by local or state health, aging or regulatory departments.
- The National Adult Protective Services Association is a national, non-profit formed in 1989 to provide coordination between local state Adult Protective Services program administrators and staff to improve the quality of services for victims of elder and vulnerable adult abuse.
- The U.S. Administration on Aging funds the National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA) to help national, state and local partners ensure older Americans live without abuse, neglect and exploitation. It was established in 1988 as an elder abuse resource center and partners with the APS.
