    Knitting a Hat Brim

    • 1). Choose an existing knit stocking cap to which you would like to add a knit hat brim. Select a contrasting or complimentary color worsted weight yarn for the hat brim.

    • 2). Pick up a stitch from the bottom front of the hat.

      1 - Knit 32 stitches along this bottom edge of the front side of the hat.
      2 - Purl every stitch
      3 - Knit every stitch
      4 - Purl every stitch
      5 - Knit two stitches together.
      Knit to the last two stitches.
      Decrease by slipping two stitches and knitting the slipped stitches together
      6 - Purl two stitches together.
      Purl to the last two stitches and decrease by slipping two stitches and purling the slipped stitches together
      7 - Knit every stitch
      8 - Purl every stitch
      9 - Knit two stitches together.
      Knit to the last two stitches.
      Decrease by slipping two stitches and knitting the slipped stitches together
      10 - Purl two stitches together.
      Purl to the last two stitches and decrease by slipping two stitches and purling the slipped stitches together
      11 - Knit two stitches together two times.
      Knit to the last four stitches and decrease by slipping two stitches and knitting the slipped stitches together (two times)
      12 - Purl two stitches together two times and purl to the last four stitches.
      Decrease by slipping two stitches and purling the slipped stitches together (two times)
      13 - Knit two stitches together two times.
      Knit to the last four stitches and decrease by slipping two stitches and knitting the slipped stitches together (two times)
      14 - Knit every stitch (this row is the turning ridge row)
      15 - Knit one stitch and increase one stitch (two times).
      Knit to the last two stitches and increase one stitch and knit one stitch (two times)
      16 - Purl one stitch and increase one stitch (two times).
      Purl to the last two stitches and increase one stitch and purl one stitch (two times)
      17 - Knit one stitch and increase one stitch (two times).
      Knit to the last two stitches and increase one stitch and knit one stitch (two times)
      18 - Purl every stitch
      19 - Knit one stitch and increase one stitch.
      Knit to the last stitch and increase one stitch and knit one stitch
      20 - Purl one stitch and increase one stitch.
      Purl to the last stitch and increase one stitch and purl one stitch
      21 - Knit every stitch
      22 - Purl every stitch
      23 - Knit one stitch and increase one stitch.
      Knit to the last stitch and increase one stitch and knit one stitch
      24 - Purl one stitch and increase one stitch.
      Purl to the last stitch and increase one stitch and purl one stitch
      25 - Knit every stitch
      26 - Purl every stitch
      27 - Knit every stitch
      28 - Purl every stitch

      Bind off

    • 3). Cut a trapezoid shape from the plastic that is 2 inches wide and 6 3/4 inches long on its longest side. The short length of the trapezoid shape will be 4 inches long.

    • 4). Fold hat brim in half at row 14 to make the brim pocket. Slip the plastic piece inside the knit pocket and slip stitch the brim closed with the tapestry needle.
