- 1). Cover your workspace and shoulders with old bath towels to prevent accidental staining.
- 2). Place a highlighting cap on your head. Poke the hair hook through one of the dots in the cap, scoop up a small section of hair and pull it out of the hole. Continue to do this until you have as much, or little, hair pulled through as you want.
- 3). Mix the hair color with the color developer in the color developer bottle. Shake the bottle to mix the two ingredients. You can buy the hair dye kit -- and all dye materials -- at any store that sells beauty supplies.
- 4). Pour the entire bottle of mixture into a dye bowl or other plastic bowl.
- 5). Put on a pair of plastic gloves to prevent staining your hands.
- 6). Dip the hair dye brush into the bowl of dye. Brush the hair dye onto the hair tufts that you pulled through the cap. Ensure that the hair is completely saturated.
- 7). Read the dye kit instructions to see how long the hair dye should be left on your hair. Allow the color time to develop -- generally between 10 and 25 minutes.
- 8). Rinse your hair under warm water without shampoo. Remove the hair cap and continue to rinse your hair. Style your hair as you normally would.
