What Are the Laws for Car Window Tint?
- The vast majority of the states enforce the law on out-of-state cars, which is a consideration if you're planning a road trip. Some of these regulations involve stiff fines and require that the vehicle be fixed.
- There are two types of tint laws, one measures the light that can pass through the tint, the other measures the light that can pass through the tint and the glass, which is listed in the laws as NET. The standard used varies by state (see Resources).
- Passenger cars and multi-passenger vehicles, such as pick-up trucks, SUVs and cargo vans, frequently have different standards, particularly applying to which windows are covered by the laws.
- Penalties also vary by state and can be a fine, a misdemeanor and/or a requirement that it be corrected. The requirement that it be corrected can be particularly damaging to an out-of-state visitor.
- The only medical condition that appears to be covered is one that, for medical reasons, requires a person to be shielded from direct rays of the sun. In the states that recognize this exemption, it must be applied for and certified by a physician.
