Mangosteen Information
- The mangosteen tree can be between 20 and 85 feet high with a dark, almost black colored bark. It has long, oval shaped leaves which are dark green. The tree's fruit is round, dark purple in color and about 3 inches in diameter. It has a thick rind surrounding white segmented flesh in the center.
- The natural range for the tree is areas such as Thailand and Burma, but it has been cultivated because of its medicinal properties in other areas. The tree today can be found in areas of India, the Caribbean and even Hawaii, but only in small numbers.
- Mangosteen needs a growing temperature between 40 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit. It requires high humidity and plenty of regular rainfall. Soil with a high organic content is the most ideal for the trees to grow. It is also important for the soil to hold moisture well, so sandy soils are not suitable.
