- 1). Contact your home country's consulate to request a copy of your birth certificate. Search for your country's consulate, often located within the country's embassy.Also search online or in a phone directory. Follow the instructions provided on the website or the phone's automated service. Sometimes an interview is necessary, but more often only a written request is required.
- 2). Fill out your country's legal document to request a birth certificate. According to the U.S. Department of State Consular Affairs office, a statement must include your full birth name, date of birth and location of birth, both parents' names and all passport information.
- 3). Check the fee. Birth certificate fees vary for each country. Ensure that you will be able to pay the fee when you send in the request.
- 4). Complete any preparatory paperwork. The consulate may send you forms to fill out, such as about your legal status in the country.
- 5). Use a passport or other identification in the waiting period. The consulate will give you a number of days, weeks or months you need to wait until it completely processes the request.
