Preparation

• 1). Grasp a chunk of hair from the top of your head. Twirl the hair and clip to the hair below it. This chunk of hair compromises the raccoon tail.
  
  
• 2). Pull your remaining hair into a ponytail, if possible. Secure the hair with a clip or elastic band.
  
  
• 3). Cover your hair with plastic wrap, to protect it from dye. Place a section of plastic wrap on your hair, below the clipped chunk of hair. Connect the plastic wrap to your hair using bobby pins. Remove the clip from your hair.
  
  
• 4). Apply Vaseline to your ears, neck and hairline. This protects your skin from the harsh effects of chemical dye.
  
  
• 5). Open your hair dye or bleach kit. Don the included plastic gloves and mix the developer and color, according to package instructions. Typically, this involves mixing the color and developer in a plastic cup or bowl.
  
  

Dye

• 1). Dip a hair dye brush in the bowl of dye.
  
  
• 2). Grasp the strand of hair in one hand. Using the other hand, place the brush 1 inch from the roots of the hair chunk. Apply dye to 1 inch of hair, brushing downwards. The top inch of your hair remains free of dye. Spread the dye around the inch of hair using your finger.
  
  
• 3). Dip the brush in the hair dye. Place the brush 3 inches from your hair's roots. Apply dye to 1 inch of hair, brushing downwards. Spread the dye using your finger.
  
  
• 4). Repeat the process of alternating dye-free hair with dyed hair until you reach the bottom of your hair chunk.
  
  
• 5). Allow the dye to soak into your hair for 20 to 45 minutes. Rinse the dye from your hair using warm water. Apply conditioner and allow your hair to dry naturally.
