    • 1). Remove the grout from around the damaged tile with a carbide-tipped scoring tool. Take care not to scratch the tiles surrounding the damaged tile.

    • 2). Cover the edges of the tiles around the damaged tiles with painter's tape.

    • 3). Drill holes into the damaged tile with a 1/4-inch ceramic drill bit. Keep the holes evenly spaced.

    • 4). Hold a narrow chisel at a 90-degree angle, and gently tap it with a hammer to break the surface of the tile. Once you have penetrated the tile's surface, hold the chisel at a 45-degree angle to pry the section of tile up. Do this until all sections of the damaged tile have been removed. If you don't have a narrow chisel, use a flat-head screwdriver.

    • 5). Chisel away the remaining thinset mortar with a wide chisel. Vacuum up dust and debris.

    • 6). Apply fresh thinset mortar to the bare counter and back of the replacement tile with a notched trowel.

    • 7). Place the tile onto the thinset, keeping it evenly spaced from the surrounding tiles. Press it down firmly until it is at the same height as the other tiles. Allow the thinset to cure for the time specified on the packaging.

    • 8). Mix a batch of grout, following the instructions on the packaging.

    • 9). Apply the grout into the gaps between the tiles with a grout float. Run the float diagonally over the tiles, and completely fill the gaps with grout. Allow the grout to set for the time specified on the packaging.
