How to Build a Minnow Bait Tank

    • 1). Wash a plastic storage container with warm, soapy water to remove any dirt or debris. Rinse all residual soap away and allow the container to air dry. Use a plastic storage container large enough to house the amount of minnows you plan to use for bait, leaving approximately half an inch in between each fish.

    • 2). Use an electric drill, with a 1/8 inch bit, to drill 10 small holes into the lid of the tank. Space the holes at least two inches apart.

    • 3). Install an aerator in the plastic container. Most aerators have suction cups that will stick to side of your plastic tank. Use a razor blade to cut a hole in the lid for the aerator's power cord. Aerators are available for purchase from most pet supply stores.

    • 4). Install a fish tank heater into the plastic container in the same fashion as the aerator. Fish tank heaters are also available from most pet supply stores.

    • 5). Fill the tank with fresh water and check the temperature with a thermometer. According to Gene Kugach, author of "Fishing Basics," minnows thrive in water between 65 and 75 degrees. Set the tank's heater to maintain this range of temperature.

    • 6). Place the minnows into the tank and cover with the lid.
