Spinner bait is a common type of bait used for bass fishing. Spinner baits are used for deep-water fishing, shallow-water fishing and covering a large area of water in a short period of time. This makes it one of the most widely used baits. The wide array of colors and blades offer bass fisherman a variety of options. - Water color types dictate which spinner bait is best. Clear water indicates shad or white colors should be used. Stained water calls for chartreuse and white or gold and silver combos. In muddy water fish respond to chartreuse and black, copper and black with painted blades.
- Blades range from sizes double zero to seven and come in copper, gold and silver. Willow leaf blades look like baitfish. They are very flashy, offer a low vibration and work best in clear or stained water. Colorado blades offer the most vibration of the available blades. Indiana blades offer both flash and vibration. Colorado and Indiana blades can be used successfully in any type of water such as clear, stained or muddy.
- Speed times depend on water color. For clear water reeling medium to fast offers the best success. Stained water required a medium retrieval speed. When fishing in muddy water, a medium to slow retrieval speed is best. Using line that is rated between 10 and 25 lbs. is best when using spinner bait.
- The water's depth determines what size spinner bait is effective. Shallow water below 4 feet deep requires a 3/16- to 3/8-oz. bait. Medium water that is over 5 feet deep is best suited for a 3/8 to a ½ ounce. Fishing in deep water over 10 feet requires ½ to oz. spinner bait.
- Casting underhand is best when using spinner bait since it will not disturb the water and scare the fish as much. Adding a trailer ensures hook-ups on short striking bass. The hook should be set immediately when the blade beat pauses. Red paint added to spinner bait makes it more attractive to bass.
