3 Things You Should Know About Treatment For Panic Attacks

103 4
Finding the right treatment for panic attacks is, of course, what every person who lives with panic attacks would like to do.
I know that until I found what worked for me, I lived in a constant state of anxiety wondering when the next panic attack would hit.
No matter what I did, panic and anxiety would come on me like a wave and I was totally helpless and at the mercy of these attacks.
This is why I think..
...
no, I KNOW that finding the right treatment will change your life, is you suffer form panic attacks.
1.
It is true that many people end up on some sort of medication for anxiety.
This was the first thing I tried, but every medication made me sick to my stomach, so I could not take any medication for anxiety.
However, I do know many people that have found tremendous relief with the right medication.
One word of caution is that people on anxiety medication often want to get off of it as soon as possible, so they will stop taking the med when they feel better.
This is the worst thing you can do.
Never ever go off the med until your doctor directs you to do so.
The type of medication that is usually prescribed for anxiety sufferers is an anti-depressant or benzodiazepines.
Some people find that the medication is effective right away, while for others it may take a few days.
The important thing to note here is that you take it regularly as prescribed.
The length of time you will need to take the medication varies.
Sometimes when a situation in your life changes, that's all it takes to get rid of panic attacks.
For example, when my second child was born my mother in law came to live with us to help out.
Now don't get me wrong, I love my mother in law, but I was not prepared to live with her and that on top of just having a baby, brought on panic attacks.
When she moved back home the attacks stopped, literally over night.
2.
People often find that taking medication along with working with a psychotherapist or counselor is also very effective in treatment for panic attacks.
In fact, this is a method that helps so many people, that I think you would be totally missing a great source of help if you did not seek some type of counseling.
Often the input from a counselor can make you look at things from an entirely different perspective.
Many psychotherapists can teach you how to look for the triggers, in other words, the things that can cause you to have a panic attack.
This could be a situation, a sensation that you feel in your body that you know precedes a panic attack or anything else, the psychotherapist should be able to help you identify these triggers and work with you to learn what to do to stop a panic attack when a trigger happens.
3.
It is also possible that your treatment for panic attacks will involve only counseling and not medication.
For some people this works just fine.
Again, I will note here that you need to see your doctor and work out a plan for how to get your anxiety under control.
