Sophie Bernier"s Feminine Kite Challenge
Sophie Bernier is originating from Reunion, a French island, southwest of Mauritius. She is 32 years old and she is a champion kitesurfer. She is also the current Vice World Champion in sky diving. This weekend on Saturday, June 12, 2014, Sophie will attempt to cross the distance between the Reunion and Mauritius islands. She will try to navigate the 174 kilometers from standing point which is Le Morne in Mauritius to Saint Rose, a port in Reunion Island.
This is dubbed as her very own €Feminine Kite Challenge." Sophie was inspired by Sebastien Coupy, the first kitesurfer to have covered the distance between the two Vanilla Islands in 2010. In May 2013, Sophie decided to go on this quest and it is her aim is to show that women can also do such a feat. She will then establish the record of being the first female to kitesurf from Mauritius to Reunion Island.
She arrived at Mauritius on March 22, 2014 and since then, she has been doing training exercises to be able to build her strength and stamina that is a requirement for her quest on the sea and under the sun. She has been kitesurfing by the coast of Le Morne and she familiarized herself with it.
Sophie is looking forward for this hyped up event of her kitesurfing career. She believes that technically, it will be difficult but being able to endure kitesurfing for long will be the vital test for her. She is definitely preparing herself physically and mentally for this is obviously not an easy task, even for her who is a kitesurfing champion and professional.
In addition to kitesurfing and sky diving, Sophie is really a natural physical enthusiast and adrenaline junkie because she tries a lot of sports such as gymnastics and parachuting. There is no doubt she is up for any challenge, even one that she fixed for herself!
The "Feminine Kite Challenge€ has a team and it composes of adviser and ambassador of Reunion Island Sebastien Coupy, fitness coach Stephane Jacquemin, mental trainer Thierry Bonnard, and Alexia Pinel for medical monitoring. The team will be of full support to Sophie throughout this challenge she set for herself. When she sets off, her team will be aboard a boat across the Indian Ocean and they will ensure that she is safe and if she needs them, they will be of assistance.
Sebastien Coupy made the crossing between Mauritius and Reunion Island while kitesurfing with a record of 7 hours and 14 minutes. That was in 2010. And now in 2014, Sophie Bernier will do her ultimate best to prove to everyone with this endeavor that she is an exceptional and record-breaking kitesurfer and that she can become the world's first female to have kitesurfed the incredible 174 kilometers from Mauritius to Reunion Island!
The air is filled with anticipation and excitement for you, Sophie. Good luck! We will be rooting for your success. We will also look forward to your other remarkable ventures in the future!
