How to Teach CPR & First Aid
- 1). Become a certified first aid and CPR instructor. The American Red Cross and offers accreditation for those wishing to teach the proper safety methods. You can contact your local chapter of the Red Cross for information on available training dates and locations. Instructor training with the Red Cross is $120, and you must be at least 16 years old to sign up. Certification is valid for two years, and the instructor must teach at least one class in its entirety to be eligible for re-certification at the end of the validity period.
- 2). Rent a location to hold classes. If you are volunteering as a teacher through the Red Cross, you can usually use its office at no cost for your sessions. You could also hold classes in your home if you have a large enough room to accommodate everyone. Your students will need enough room to sit in the floor while practicing techniques on their dummies.
- 3
Prepare your classroom with the needed essentials. These may include textbooks, face masks, dummies and bandages. If you are a certified instructor through the Red Cross, the materials, with the exception of the textbook, will be supplied to you. Other organizations may require you to purchase the supplies, so you should check with them prior to becoming an instructor. Make sure you have everything ready prior to each session to ensure things run smoothly. - 4). Advertise your services. Determine the fee you will charge based on the cost of materials and time needed to educate your students. Schedule classes that are flexible around others' schedules, such as evenings or weekends. Run an ad in the local newspaper or place fliers around the city.
