How Do You Make Night Splints?

    • 1). Cut 10 to 12 cloth strips to the width and length you need for your splint.

    • 2). Mix plaster of Paris with water until you achieve a pasty consistency.

    • 3). Spread an even layer of paste over each strip and layer them on top of one another. Place a 3- to 4-inch thick layer of cotton on the side of the splint that will come in contact with your body.

    • 4). Construct a night splint to relieve plantar fasciitis. Cut the cloth strips for your splint 4- to 6-inches wide, depending on the size of your leg. Trim the length so the splint will start at the ball of your foot and extend up the back of your leg. It should end 2 inches below the middle of our knee. Gently wrap the Ace bandage, beginning at the ball of the foot. Make the fit snug so the bandage doesn't wrinkle. Overlap each layer over the previous one by a quarter of its width. Continue wrapping until you reach the top of the splint. Secure the bandage with two metal fasteners. While the splint dries, keep your foot slightly bent upward, at slightly more than a 90-degree bend. This will gently stretch the plantar fascia, which will reduce your pain in the morning.

    • 5). Apply a night splint to relieve the pain of carpal tunnel syndrome. Splint the hand in a slightly upward, extended position and bent slightly backward. This decreases pressure on the median nerve. Cut the splint at least 3-inches wide; add an extra inch of width for a large arm. Apply the splint on the palm side of the hand and arm. Start the splint at the base of the fingers and end it approximately 2 to 3 inches before the elbow. Wrap it with the Ace bandage, beginning at the base of the hand and working toward the elbow. Reach the end and secure the bandage with one or two metal fasteners.

    • 6). Relieve a painful thumb injury. Cut a 2- to 3-inch wide splint. Place your hand in the same position it would assume when you're shaking hands or holding a drinking glass. Place the splint so it extends from the tip of your thumb to a point 3 or 4 inches from the bend in your elbow. Wrap the splint lightly with a 2-inch elastic bandage to keep it from sliding. Secure it with a metal bandage fastener while the plaster of Paris dries.
