How to Build a Wall Fountain for My Balcony
- 1). Measure, mark and cut a section of exterior grade plywood to fit the desired dimensions for the balcony wall fountain. Make sure to use plywood that is at least 1/2-inch thick. Drill a 5/8-inch diameter hole through the center of the plywood.
- 2). Cover both sides and all exposed edges of the plywood with polyurethane spray sealer and let it dry. Make sure that you cover the wood around the drilled hole with polyurethane. Apply a second coat of sealer to all of the wooden surfaces and let it dry.
- 3). Glue 4-inch ceramic tiles to the front of the wood with waterproof construction adhesive. Do not leave spaces between the tiles. Cut the tiles as needed to fit the surface with a tile cutter. Do not cover the center hole.
- 4). Place one 4-inch ceramic tile in a plastic storage bag; seal the bag. Wrap a towel around the bag. Hit the tile with a hammer, through the towel and the bag, until the tile breaks into pieces. Glue the pieces to the plywood around the center hole; do not leave spaces between the tiles. Cover the open wood on the face and around the perimeter of the hole with the tile pieces. Let the adhesive dry.
- 5). Follow the procedure in Step 4 to break two more 4-inch tiles. Glue the pieces around the perimeter of the plywood. Continue to break as many tiles as needed to cover the cut edges of the plywood. Let the glue dry.
- 6). Attach two wall hangers to the balcony wall where you plan to hang the fountain. Make sure to use the appropriate type of fasteners to attach the hangers to the wall. If the wall is cement, use masonry fasteners; if the wall is wood, use wood screws. Attach the corresponding fasteners to the backside of the plywood. Hang the plywood on the wall.
- 7). Situate a rectangular planter beneath the tiled plywood wall fountain. Place a submersible fountain pump inside the planter, at one end of the rectangle. Cut a strip of flexible plastic tubing long enough to reach from the pump to the hole in the center of the plywood.
- 8). Remove the tiled wall fountain from the wall and place it face down on a flat surface. Insert one end of the tubing through the center hole. Tape the tube to the plywood with duct tape, just beneath the hole. Angle the tubing to the bottom corner of the plywood. Tape the tubing in place. Rehang the wall fountain.
- 9). Fit the plastic tube over the fountain pump's spout. Tape the tube around the spout. Add water to the planter to cover the submersible pump before plugging in the pump.
