How to Replace a British Birth Certificate
- 1). Visit the website for the General Register Office of Britain and Wales (see Resources).
- 2). Click on the link that reads "Order a Certificate Online Now."
- 3). Click the link near the bottom of the page that says "Registration" and register for an account with the GRO website. Fill out all of the empty fields that are required; the required fields are noted with a red star next to them.
- 4). Click the appropriate box; read the options carefully, as ordering a birth certificate while living in England or Wales is different than ordering a birth certificate while located outside of the country.
- 5). Enter a GRO reference number if you know the number. If you do not know the number, enter the year of your birth in the appropriate box, so the GRO can search for the number for you.
- 6). Confirm the address that you wish to have the certificate sent to.
- 7). Fill out the requested information. You will need to know details about both parents. You will also be asked whether you want the document mailed to you with standard or rushed delivery. Rush delivery costs more.
- 8). Pay the fee online using a credit card or debit card.
